Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)This period is 7 months long and includes:
- The 3 months before the month you turn 65
- The month you turn 65
- The 3 months after the month you turn 65
Annual Election Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7Every year, open enrollment falls between October 15th - December 7th. During this period, you can change or enroll in a new Medicare Advantage or Part D Prescription drug plan. Plan choices you make during this period become effective on January 1 of the following year unless you qualify for the special enrollment period.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 – March 31During this period, you have a one-time opportunity to:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, Part A and Part B
- Sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (if you return to Original Medicare)
- Drop your stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan
Special Election Period (SEP)Special Election Period allows you to make changes to your plan when certain events happen in your life, such as if you move or you lose other insurance coverage. Rules vary for each SEP.
These plans, also called Medicare Parts C and D, are offered by FirstCarolinaCare Insurance Company, in partnership with Healthy State – an organization affiliated with Mission Health System. FirstCarolinaCare Insurance Company’s FirstMedicare Direct plans are HMO and PPO health plans with Medicare contracts. Enrollment in First Medicare Direct depends on contract renewal.
